About Tunduru District Council (DC)

Tunduru District is one of the six (6) districts of Ruvuma Region. The district was established in 1905 during the colonial period when the German government built a fort in the Kadewele area near the present Revenue Authority (TRA) building.

DISTRICT SIZE AND ADMINISTRATIVE AREAS

Tunduru District covers an area of ​​18,778 square kilometers. Also, the District has 7 Divisions, 39 Wards, 157 Villages, 1,166 Suburbs and 2 Election Constituencies (North Tunduru and South Tunduru). The District has 53 Honorable Councilors (39 Nominees, 14 Special Seats), and 3 Honorable Members of Parliament (2 Nominees and 1 Special Seats).

Tunduru District is between 36 ° 30 ’and 38 ° Longitude towards the East, 10 ° 15’ and 11 ° 45 ’South Latitude.

  • To the west it borders Namtumbo District.
  • East borders Nachingwea District (Lindi) and Masasi (Mtwara).
  • The South is bordered by the People’s Republic of Mozambique where the Ruvuma River forms a

POPULATION

According to the results of the Population and Housing Census conducted in August, 2012 the population was 298,279 of whom 143,660 (48.2%) and Women 154,619 (51.8%). In 2016, the District is estimated to have a population of 331,821 of whom 159,815 are Men and 172,006 are Women. The average population growth in Tunduru District is 2.7 percent per annum.

WEATHER

The climate is an average temperature of 25 ° c suitable for the development of various crops. The average rainfall is 960 mm per year with rainfall from late November to April. The type of vegetation is miombo. The soil conditions are sandy and clayey in lowland areas. Thirty percent of the villages within the district have dry riverbeds throughout the year. Tunduru District has an elevation of between 200 and 500 meters above sea level and the landscape is flat and hills on the Southwest side.
